New York City FC’s road woes resurfaced in a frustrating 2-0 loss to the New England Revolution on Saturday night, exposing a familiar issue for Pascal Jansen’s side: a lack of end product in the final third. The result, sealed by goals on either side of halftime, extended NYCFC’s away-game struggles and raised further questions about the team’s attacking cohesion.
After the match, Jansen didn’t shy away from analyzing the performance with brutal honesty.
“We have shown in several games that we have the quality to be very dangerous in the final third,” he said. “But today it was tough given the shape of the opponent as well, having a lot of bodies behind the ball.”
New England’s compact defensive setup made life difficult for City’s forwards, who were unable to find space or rhythm in the attacking phase. Jansen emphasized the importance of precision and mental sharpness when facing a well-organized defensive block.
“You need to be very, very sharp and very bright in these moments in order to get some of the moments that you’re looking for in the final third,” he explained. “If you look at the first half, the quality was simply not there in order to have more threat going forward to their goal.”
Despite the setback, Jansen remained optimistic about the growth trajectory of his squad. Several players are stepping into new roles or adapting to the demands of his system, and the Dutch coach believes that individual improvement will eventually translate into collective success.
“We have guys who are developing themselves into better players with more impact, more quality,” he said. “Unfortunately, it’s not something that is consistent yet.”
The message was clear: the potential is there, but unlocking it requires time, chemistry, and refinement. For now, NYCFC must work through its inconsistencies, especially away from home, where goals have been hard to come by and mistakes often punished.
As the season progresses, the pressure will mount. But if Jansen can harness the raw quality in his squad and turn flashes of brilliance into sustained performance, NYCFC could still shape into one of the league’s most dangerous attacking units. For now, though, consistency remains the missing ingredient.
