New York City FC has announced that midfielder James Sands will join German Bundesliga side FC St. Pauli on loan through June 30, 2025. The agreement includes an option for St. Pauli to extend the loan through the 2025/26 season, contingent on certain conditions being met. Concurrently, Sands has extended his contract with New York City FC through December 31, 2028.

Since rejoining New York City FC at the start of the 2023 season, Sands has been a key contributor, making 67 appearances across all competitions, providing four assists, and scoring his first goal for the club. In 2024, he reached several career milestones, including becoming the first homegrown player to join the prestigious Century Club after making 100 MLS appearances. Sands also recorded a career-high in assists, became the third homegrown player to score a goal, and was recognized as the club’s Defensive MVP for his standout performances.

This loan represents an exciting opportunity for Sands to continue his development while gaining experience in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.
