Serbian forward Jovan Mijatović has joined Belgian Pro League side Oud-Heverlee Leuven on loan until June 2025, a move that raises questions about NYCFC’s long-term strategy and commitment to player development.

Did Mijatović Get a Fair Chance at NYCFC?

Signed in February 2024 from Red Star Belgrade under the U22 Initiative, Mijatović was supposed to be a promising attacking addition. However, his time in MLS was far from ideal. In 17 appearances, he managed just one goal—an unimpressive tally, but one that also prompts debate about his role and usage in the squad.

Was he truly given enough minutes to adapt? MLS is a demanding league with its physicality and intensity, and young international players often need time to adjust. Instead of allowing for that natural process, NYCFC has quickly moved him out, raising doubts about their patience with young talents.

Development Move or Sign of an Impending Exit?

Sporting director David Lee justified the loan as a way to provide Mijatović with consistent playing time, something he wasn’t getting in New York. The Belgian Pro League has a strong track record of developing young players, making it a logical destination.

However, when a player is sent on loan so soon after signing, it often signals that the club is already reconsidering their plans. If Mijatović flourishes in Belgium, NYCFC could recall him. But if he struggles, a permanent exit becomes the most likely outcome.

A Larger Trend at NYCFC?

Mijatović’s loan isn't an isolated case. NYCFC also sent James Sands to St. Pauli in Bundesliga 2 this winter, suggesting broader squad restructuring. Yet, with multiple key players leaving, the club’s long-term vision remains unclear. Are these loans calculated steps toward development, or signs of uncertainty in NYCFC’s roster planning?

For Mijatović, this loan could be a fresh start—or the beginning of the end of his NYCFC chapter.
