As New York City FC prepares to host Minnesota United at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, head coach Pascal Jansen has reiterated his team’s commitment to controlling matches and staying true to their playing philosophy, despite a recent setback.
City heads into the contest aiming to bounce back from a 3-0 loss to Atlanta United that ended their three-game unbeaten streak. Speaking to the media on Thursday, Jansen stressed the importance of dictating play, particularly in managing transitions during attacking phases.
“Like always, in our games, we want to control the game,” Jansen said. “We want to control the ball. We have to find a good balance between playing direct and managing counters while in possession—that’s the biggest challenge for us.”
Despite the disappointment in Atlanta, Jansen maintained that the squad remains focused and reflective. He emphasized the importance of analyzing performances after every set of six games to assess both strengths and areas for improvement.
“We’ve had our evaluations, like normal,” he added. “Whether it’s success or disappointment, you’ve got 24 hours to feel it, and then we move on and focus on ourselves again.”
Sunday’s visitors, Minnesota United, arrive in strong form, riding a five-game unbeaten streak in the league. Their attacking duo of Tani Oluwaseyi and Kelvin Yeboah—each with four goals this season—pose a significant threat that Jansen’s side will need to manage carefully.
“That’s a huge part of their strategy, and they’ve been very successful going into the MLS this season,” Jansen said. “It’s something we have to manage carefully… controlling the counter while you’re in possession is a tough task, but it’s one we’re prepared for.”
The match also carries off-the-pitch significance as it forms part of NYCFC’s “Healthy Lives” initiative, which Jansen praised for promoting wellness and community values.
“Being healthy is something that we have to cherish as a community,” he said. “Whether it’s food, nutrition, sleep, or lifestyle—it all matters. Within our club, within our community, we take that seriously.”
With a firm eye on both the game and the bigger picture, Jansen and his squad are determined to deliver a performance that reflects their values and their ambitions on Sunday.
