NYCFC, new stadium at Willets Point in Queens?

A soccer-specific stadium is one of two proposals for development at Willets Point in Queens, according to Crain’s New York.

The new development would be across the street from Citi Field.

The stadium proposal has a venue for as many as 25,000 seats, according to papers obtained by the newspaper. It also has parking for the venue at Citi Field. The proposal also includes retail space, a residential building, open space, a school, new police and fire stations.

The other plan calls for six blocks of residential buildings, retail, a high school, open span, a health center and a fire station, Crain’s reported.

New York City has been lacking a medium-sized stadium. Many of the stadiums in the five boroughs are small and usually seat between 2,000 to 6,000 fans. Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, home to baseball’s Yankees and Mets, respectively, are considered too big and not conducive to a proper soccer environment on a regular basis.

NYCFC has been searching for a soccer-specific stadium before it joined Major League Soccer in 2015. It has played at Yankee Stadium.
